How to connect Disney's stories with a card game

After an awesome tour of Ravensburger's office in Seattle, as well as introducing the team responsible for the game since its launch in 2023, there was a mix of presentation and chat about the importance of Lorcana not only being an entertaining game, but also a showcase of the Disney brand, and hence its importance - many people of all ages have fond memories related to Disney content.

Analysis: It was very significant to start the broadcast with a reminder about Disney Lorcana's focus: not only the game itself, but also how much carefulness comes with the intellectual properties - or IPs - involved, because of the Disney brand.

New product - Collection Starter Set

A new product has been announced, consisting of a folder to store/protect your collection, and also 4 booster packs, which will be from the Fabled edition - it will be the 1st edition in which this product will be used.

Analysis: it is very important to pay attention to feedback from those already involved in the game, but not lose track of those who do not yet know or are part of the Lorcana community. This type of product is very attractive, especially for new players, so it is great to see that acquisition continues to be a focus.

Global Releases

2025 marks a new foray for Lorcana into several countries. The game's release in both Japan and China was discussed, and now it'll release in other Asian countries, and also in Brazil.

Analysis: It's great to see Brazil mentioned, especially since there is a strong demand from the public for the game to be translated in Portuguese. As we know, Copag will be responsible for the game in Brazil, and we hope to have more news about how the game will be developed in our country.

Next Sets

The 8th Set - Reign of Jafar

The next and eighth set, Reign of Jafar, was highlighted, with several spoilers and the confirmation of a new product: Palace Heist, a PvE game set from the Ilumineer’s Quest line. Similar to the product released with the fourth edition, it is basically a villain deck, in this case Jafar's, and you - along with other people, each with their own deck - can face him and try to defeat him.

Among the spoilers, we saw that two themes from the 7h set will continue to be developed: the Illusion characters and the multicolored dual-ink cards.

Finally, a new Disney classic will enter Lorcana with this set: Bambi, with several cards representing not only the main character but also others from the animation.

Analysis: we saw many cards spoiled, and we'll have a specific article for them. Regarding the set itself, it's great to see that themes from the previous set keep on being developed - this not only gives an idea of continuity and fluidity between sets, but also allows for new archetypes to appear, and support for existing ones!

The 9th Set - Fabled

Fabled is one of the most anticipated sets, since it marks Lorcana's second anniversary. The pre-release will be on August 29th, and the worldwide release will be on September 5th.

In addition to having new cards, Fabled will also have several reprints of the first sets. Some have already been spoiled during the broadcast, such as Stitch - Rock Star, Winnie the Pooh - Hunny Wizard, and Tinker Bell - Giant Fairy.

Another Disney animation that will enter Lorcana with Fabled's release is A Goofy Movie! In addition to Goofy, his son, Max, will also come to the game - and another character being hyped is the singer Power Line, which has already been confirmed that not only will be a Singer, but will be one of the best in the game!

Finally, two new rarities were announced: Epic and Iconic, which means Lorcana will have eight different rarities. However, both Epic and Iconic consist of special treatment on cards that will exist in other rarities - that is, greater chances of shiny and different cards, but they will not be only available on special rarities.

Analysis: the Fabled set has been one of the most hyped in the game, and with good reason. Many new features, which aim to please competitive players, collectors and the more casual audience. The complete list of reprints will be very important for the game's competitive side, due to the announced Rotation - we will talk more about it in a bit.

Preview for the 10th set - Whispers in the Well

There was some talk about the next set after Fabled, which apparently will have a slightly darker and more mysterious tone: Whispers in the Well. For now, what has been said is that a new mechanic will involve Whispers-type characters, but nothing else has been mentioned in this regard.

Among the new Disney animations coming to Lorcana, the set will feature The Black Cauldron and Gargoyles!

Analysis: this is a preview, but it's great to know that new mechanics are still being developed without neglecting the game's previous mechanics. And if you're a fan of the Disney animations that'll come for the first time, it won't be long to have them in your collection!

Rotation in the Core Constructed Format

This was one of the most important announcements regarding the game itself, especially the competitive side. Starting with the ninth set, Fabled, the game will have an annual Rotation for the Core Constructed format, only.

In other words, with the release of Fabled, the 9th set, the first 4 sets of the game will no longer be valid in Core Constructed, except for cards that may be re-released/reprinted, such as the ones we that were already revealed to be in Fabled.

Analysis: Veterans of other TCGs are no strangers to the Rotation theme. Many see it as necessary, since bringing new people into the game becomes progressively more difficult when all sets can be used in tournaments - in practice, you eliminate from the competitive game people who were unable to keep up with the first sets. Thus, Lorcana shows itself to be a more mature game, which plans for longevity and the progressive entry of new players.

Considering the proposed format for the rotation, which then occurs every 4 sets, it is worth highlighting that the fourth set in each cycle is the one that will always have the least time in the Core Constructed format. If we compare, for example, The First Chapterlink outside website - released in August/2023 - with Ursula's Returnlink outside website - released in May/2024 -, we see that the first had approximately 24 months of gameplay, while the other had just over 16. This eight month difference may affect the value of the sets and their relevance in the secondary market, and also increase the value of the sets that stay around longer.

New Format - Infinity Constructed

Along with the Rotation's announcement - which, once again, will only affect the Core Constructed format -, a new format was also announced, which will basically be the one that will not have any rotation and all cards from any set can be used: Infinity Constructed.

Ad

In addition to using any card, Infinity will also have its own ban list, separate from Core Constructed, so it will be possible to use cards such as Hiram Flaversham - Toymaker, which were recently banned. It was also announced that the format will have official support, can be used in LGS's, and that it will also be featured in some Disney Lorcana Challenges scheduled for the second half of the year.

Analysis: It is important to receive the news that the rotated cards will continue to be used in another format within the game. This is a natural evolution of every card game, as the availability of cards in general increases. It will undoubtedly be a very fun format - and with the announced competitive support, it will build its own identity and enrich Lorcana's content!

Organized Play Updates

The official date for the first Lorcana World Championship has finally been announced: June 28th and 29th, at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida/USA. The event will be closed to the general public, but broadcast via the official Twitch channel - according to Steven Cooper, director of Organized Play, the idea is to focus more on the player experience of the participants in this first world championship.

To promote the broadcast, the official promo card for the event, A Whole New World, will also be available to spectators in some way, but no further details about this were mentioned.

Finally, it was announced that the official Disney Lorcana Challenges event calendar will be announced during the world championship broadcast.

Analysis: finally the first Lorcana World Championship, to crown the game's first competitive season! And also confirmation that we will have DLCs in the second half of the year, although the schedule will be be announced only during the world championship.

It makes sense, since Worlds marks the end of the first season and the beginning of the next, but with the popularity of the game and the importance of travel plans, etc., it would be nice to have some additional data - at least the regions these Challenges will take place in, how many in Europe, in the US, etc.

Conclusion

The broadcast marks, in many ways, a new moment in the game's history - and especially better communication between Ravensburger and its player base, something that was quite lacking.

Although some changes may not be to everyone's liking - especially the Rotation -, it is important to remember that the entire broadcast focused on the longevity aspects of Lorcana, and the importance of not only retaining current players but also continuing to acquire new players - whether by entering new markets or by bringing in people who want to try out a game within the Disney brand.

All of this shows how much the company cares for Lorcana, which is reflected in the quality of the game and the release of new sets. It also shows that they seek to improve, and that they are responding to feedback from the community.

Therefore, it is with some optimism that we enter this new chapter, and we hope that the demonstrations of support, both from Ravensburger and the Lorcana community, can align and bring longevity and stability to the game.

What did you think of both the announcements and our analysis? Leave your feedback!

Hugs and see you next time!
